Guided By Wilderness

Meet the Akhaia Outfitter guides – ready to take you on the adventure of a lifetime.

Jeremy Mitchell – Owner / Operator

Guiding has become a second nature to me. While living briefly in Ontario as a child, my long solo snowmobile endeavors ended up coming across a lost group of Americans, and after leading them safely home, I received my first tip. Experiencing gratitude and a sense of accomplishment, guiding became my passion. After moving back to NL as an early teenager, I began guiding numerous groups into western NL’s backcountry. Opening up my own guiding business as a teenager, I excelled in snowmobile tours, fly fishing excursions, and remote moose hunting trips.

As life progressed and the pursuit of making money, the oilsand’s life became a reality with guiding taking a backseat. As with many things in life, I made drastic changes and found myself right back in western NL as a Pastor. After guiding once again for a local outfitter, guiding became a passion and a pursuit. I then started Akhaia Outfitters with my good friend, Greg Samms. I have a love for archery and take pride in the exhilarating experience of close encounters with giant Eastern Canadian Moose, big black bears, and the majestic woodland caribou.

I find myself interested in fly fishing, mainly for the glorious Atlantic Salmon. I pride myself in tying my own flies, especially my personal pattern of the Silver Bull Moose. I enjoy playing many musical instruments, talking about the goodness of God, and spending time with my wife and four daughters. And to add fuel to the blaze, I love to be in the epic pursuit of that trophy bull moose.

Hard work and attention to detail as proven to be successful for me. Growing up on a large dairy and broiler chicken farm as engraved those traits into my everyday life. Farming served my family well over the years but my biggest passion in life is hunting and pretty much anything else related to outdoor adventures. The year 2007 I took the step into the Tourism Industry and purchased a hunting lodge that offered Moose, Woodland Caribou and Black Bear hunting packages. Like the saying nothing comes easy in life was also true for my first few years of business. I had to rely so much on my farming work ethic and keeping working away at my goals and believing in myself and new business. Today I am proud to say I built up a great business in the Outfitting sector of Tourism. I believe in offering an honest hunt and providing the very best to my clients in the things I have control off. Akhaia Outfitters is one of best hunting destinations for Newfoundland big game hunting.

I love to hunt and been more into archery hunting the past number of years and we love to host archery hunters at the lodge. Fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon is another passion and along with snowmobiling in the winter helps to fill the void till hunting season.

All year long though I love being a great dad to my beautiful daughter and committed husband to my wife Katrina. They are the reason I work so hard in the hunting industry and I know they support me fully in all that I do.

Andrew Gillingham – Guide

My passion for the outdoors started at a young age. Raised in rural Newfoundland in the 80’s, the land was my playground. Moose hunting at 5 years old and paddling my own boat out into the salt water at 7 was nothing out of the ordinary.

While I’ve had the opportunity to hunt numerous species across Canada, the majority of my hunting was focused on elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, and moose in Alberta, British Columbia and of course, Newfoundland. I’ve guided friends and family on some of the best hunts I have ever experienced. There’s no better feeling than being able to employ my skills to ignite a passion in someone else— something I’m proud to have shared with my wife Courtney and our children.

Hunting is so much more than pulling a trigger. The joy I get from hunting, comes in the landscape, the encounters, and the memories made— now let’s getcha moose b’y!

Adam Gillingham – Guide

My passion for the outdoors started at a young age. Born in Baie Verte, Newfoundland, my childhood was spent hunting moose, trapping rabbits and fishing for trout. My Father had my brother and I calling moose before we could talk. Growing up with such a strong influence, I learned to appreciate moose and understand their natural behaviours. When my family relocated to Alberta (as so many Newfoundlanders do) I was able to expand my hunting resume. In addition to black bear and moose that I so knowingly love to hunt, I regularly hunted mule deer, white tail deer and elk. While I was grateful for the opportunity to hunt new species of wildlife, I always knew Newfoundland was my home.

In 2014, I permanently relocated back to “the rock” Now, I spend every Fall hunting moose and caribou and every Winter trapping fur-bearers. Guiding has become a natural role I take— passing down knowledge given by my Father before me and his Father before him.

Hunting is in my blood— something I love to do but by far, the best part of it all is experiencing the beautiful, untouched wilderness of Newfoundland.

Conrad Decker – Guide

My name is Conrad Decker, I began hunting when I was old enough to walk and chase my father. I started my hunting career following him around everywhere he went in the woods until he put me to work helping carry his gear. I began catching rabbits at a young age before I could use a gun. Moose, bear and duck hunting quickly became big interests of mine that consumed most of my time.

If I’m not hunting, I’m fishing or snowmobiling. In the summer months I spend countless days and nights on the river chasing Atlantic salmon, sometimes I’m even lucky enough to catch them!  I am also a commercial fisherman, fishing for lobsters, crab, cod, halibut, and mackerel. In the winter months I ride snowmobile just about every day, spending most of my time riding around Western Brook Gorge and the Long Range Mountains. I recently acquired my trappers license and have been snaring coyotes and foxes and trying to catch an elusive Lynx.

My firearms of choice is a Browning .300 Remington Ultra Magnum and a Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 12 gauge. I have also recently been shooting a Hoyt Powermaxx compound bow and have harvested 3 moose and a black bear with it.
